Dry fruit and nut led boxes, suited to a household keeping the fast
Navratri is the festival most likely to catch a gift-giver out, and the reason is narrow and specific: for nine days a large share of the people you would send something to cannot eat most of what is in a standard gift hamper. A vrat is not simply eating less. It usually excludes grains and ordinary flour, lentils, onion and garlic, and regular table salt, which is replaced with sendha namak. What is left is a short list — fruit, dairy, potatoes, the vrat flours, sabudana, makhana, and dry fruits and nuts.
Which is why an expensive box of chocolates can sit unopened for nine days in an observing household, while a plain dry fruit box gets opened the evening it arrives. Premium and appropriate are not the same thing here. If you do not know how strictly a household observes, dry fruits are the gift that works either way — and that is precisely how they became India's default festive gift rather than a safe fallback.
Regional differences matter more at Navratri than at most festivals. In Gujarat the nine nights belong to garba and dandiya. In Bengal the same days are Durga Puja, built around pandal-hopping and a very different hosting rhythm. In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh it is Golu — a tiered display of dolls and an open house, where every woman and girl who visits leaves with thamboolam. In the north, Ashtami and Navami bring Kanya Pujan. The gifting need is different in each: Golu households want quantity that divides into many small bags; a garba host wants something light and shareable; a Kanya Pujan family wants nothing at all for the girls beyond the modest customary token, but could use something themselves after eight days of fasting and a day of cooking.

Small, useful, age-appropriate items — stationery, hair accessories, bangles, a tiffin box or sipper — usually ₹20 to ₹200 per girl, alongside the meal and a little dakshina. The convention is deliberately modest, so a hamper is not the right gift for the girls. It suits the host family, who have been fasting and are cooking for a dozen people.
