Navratri 2026: Dates, Vrat-Friendly Gifts & Delivery

Navratri is the festival most likely to catch a gift-giver out, and the reason is simple: for nine days a large share of the people you would send something to cannot eat most of what is in a standard gift hamper. Get that one fact right and the rest of the decision becomes easy.

When is Navratri 2026? Sharad Navratri 2026 begins with Ghatasthapana on Sunday, 11 October and runs nine nights through Maha Navami on Monday, 19 October, closing with Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on Tuesday, 20 October. Durga Ashtami falls on Sunday, 18 October. For 2027 the festival starts earlier, on 30 September. Note that Chaitra Navratri in spring is a separate observance — this guide covers the autumn one, which is the gifting season.

The fasting problem, which is the whole problem. Many people keep a vrat for all nine days, and a Navratri fast is not simply "eating less". It usually rules out grains and regular flour, lentils, onion and garlic, and ordinary table salt, which is replaced with sendha namak. What remains is a specific and quite short list: fruit, dairy, potatoes, and the vrat flours — kuttu, singhara, rajgira — along with sabudana, makhana and dry fruits and nuts. This is why a box of chocolates or a biscuit assortment, however expensive, can sit unopened for nine days in a house that is observing. A dry fruit or nut hamper is one of the few gifts a fasting household can open the same evening.

So: what to actually send during Navratri. Dry fruits and nuts are the safe, correct answer — almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, dates. Makhana (foxnuts) is the other reliable one and is genuinely a vrat staple rather than a stretch. Fruit is welcome and traditional. Where people go wrong is assuming premium equals appropriate: a luxury chocolate box is a more expensive gift and a less usable one. If you do not know whether the household is fasting, send the dry fruits — they work either way, which is exactly why they have become the default festive gift in India rather than a fallback.

Kanya Pujan, and an honest note about it. On Ashtami or Navami many families perform Kanya Pujan — Kanjak in the north — inviting nine young girls home, washing their feet, feeding them halwa, poori and chana, and sending them off with a small gift and a little dakshina. If you are searching for Kanjak gifts, be aware that the convention is deliberately modest: stationery, hair accessories, bangles, a steel tiffin box or sipper, typically ₹20 to ₹200 per girl. That is not a hamper occasion and we would not pretend otherwise. Where a gourmet box does fit the day is the other side of it — something for the host family who has been fasting for eight days and is now cooking for a dozen people.

Golu, and gifting in the South. In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Navratri means Golu (also Bommai Kolu or Bommala Koluvu) — a tiered display of dolls in the front room, and an open house for nine evenings. Women and girls who visit are sent home with thamboolam: betel leaves, areca nut, a coconut, fruit, kumkum, and usually a small gift. Households host dozens of visitors across the week, so the practical need is quantity rather than extravagance. A large tray or a bulk box that can be broken up into many small thamboolam bags is far more useful here than a single showpiece hamper.

Garba nights and what to carry. In Gujarat and increasingly everywhere else, Navratri evenings belong to garba and dandiya. If you are invited to someone's home before a garba night, or to a society dandiya where a family is hosting, the gift follows the same logic as any open house: shareable, shelf-stable, and openable in company. Keep it light. People are dancing until midnight and nobody wants to be handed something that needs carrying home carefully.

Dussehra is the corporate gifting window people miss. India's corporate gifting market ran past ₹25,000 crore in 2025 and grows at roughly 12–14% a year, with Diwali alone taking about 40% of the annual volume. That concentration is precisely the argument for gifting at Dussehra instead. A hamper that lands on 20 October arrives before the Diwali deluge, when it is still an individual gesture rather than the fourth box on a colleague's desk that week. Dussehra also carries a cleaner theme for a client note — a victory, a fresh start, the traditional day to begin something new — which is easier to write sincerely than generic festive wishes.

Corporate ordering, practically. Bulk hampers need roughly two weeks' lead time for consistent stock across a large order, so for a Dussehra delivery the window opens in late September. Two Navratri-specific things to brief your supplier on: keep it vegetarian and eggless, since a meaningful share of recipients will be observing; and if you are shipping to multiple offices, confirm that every box in the order is identical, because visibly mismatched hampers in a staff distribution cause more irritation than a cheaper gift would have.

Order timing & delivery for Navratri. Navratri falls on Sunday, 11 October 2026 — 28 days away. Mumbai: order by 9 October for same-day or scheduled delivery. Metros (Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata): order by 7 October for express delivery. Tier-2 cities: order by 5 October. NRI / overseas gifting to India: order by 1 October. What not to send. Anything containing onion or garlic. Anything non-vegetarian, gelatin-set sweets included. Alcohol — during Navratri specifically, many households that would accept it at other times will not. Leather. And, the one people get wrong most often, grain-based snacks: crackers, biscuits, namkeen and most savoury mixes are all off the table for anyone keeping the fast, which is the single most common way a well-chosen Navratri gift goes uneaten.
